Healthy local businesses are roots for neighborhood residents
West Denver is an area with a high concentration of culturally rich small businesses that represent the equally diverse communities surrounding them. 83% of west Denver is at risk of gentrification, making the preservation of these cultural BIPOC-owned businesses critical to maintaining west Denver’s sense of place, preserving community resources, and preventing involuntary displacement.
The connection between community members and locally-owned businesses is strong. Purchasing a Gift Card fosters social cohesion and promotes economic opportunities for residents by helping them to stay in their original neighborhoods. A Gift Card also unlocks a new way for recipients to experience this part of town and all it has to offer. Win-win!

Artesanias Mi Mexico
My husband and I are from the municipality of Acajete Puebla, Mexico; we love our culture and traditions and are a country of many customs. Now that we are in the month of November and with the celebration of the Day of the Dead, I remember when I was a child my parents took us to our town’s cemetery, to visit my baptism godparents. My mother filled a basket with bread and fruit to take them as an ofrenda(offerings) and we decorated their graves with flowers of cempazuchitl (marigold) and as we stood there, we remembered the times we had them in our lives and the opportunities we had to hug them when they were alive.

The partnership behind the Gift Card initiative
The West Denver Marketplaces Gift Card initiative is funded by a Neighborhood Activation grant from Denver Economic Opportunity and Development (DEDO). The Denver Housing Authority (DHA), in partnership with BuCu West and West Denver Renaissance Collaborative (WDRC), initiated the grant as a responsive solution to community needs in West Denver. District 3 Councilwoman Jaime Torres and Sun Valley Kitchen are also supportive stakeholders in the initiative.
This collaborative project will elevate economic activity by increasing awareness of culturally unique and BIPOC-owned businesses and encouraging demand for the food, products, and services of small businesses throughout west Denver.
The Neighborhood Activation grant was approved in October 2022, providing funding to cover admin costs, promotional events, and communications and marketing efforts around this Gift Card.
